Armenia, one of the oldest countries in the world, located in the Armenian Highlands, has accumulated not only an incredible wealth of natural beauty but also thousands of years of history reflected in numerous unique and magnificent architectural monuments. Many of these treasures have survived to this day. In this article, we will try to list the most beautiful places in Armenia that are definitely worth visiting and that should be included in your travel itinerary.
Khor Virap Monastery with Mount Ararat
The view of Khor Virap Monastery against the backdrop of Mount Ararat, with vineyards in the foreground, is perhaps the most iconic image of Armenia. It is a true symbol of the country, familiar to almost every visitor.
This is the closest viewpoint in Armenia from where you can admire the biblical Mount Ararat. On a clear day, you can enjoy this breathtaking panorama endlessly. We recommend planning your visit as early as possible in the morning, before the air warms up and haze covers Ararat. This way, you can see every ridge and every detail of the mountain, imagining where Noah supposedly “moored” his Ark.
Tatev Monastery
Located in the village of Tatev, Tatev Monastery is another landmark that deserves special attention. Situated on the edge of the Vorotan Gorge, this monastery complex has a unique atmosphere and energy.
In the past, one of the largest universities in Armenia operated here. The monastery was badly damaged during a powerful earthquake about a century ago, but it was restored in the 1990s. Today, it is an active monastery.
However, people come to Tatev not only to admire this architectural masterpiece, which blends so beautifully into the surrounding landscape, but also to meet its abbot, Father Mikael. It is no coincidence that our Tatev tour has been one of our most popular tours for many years.
Lake Sevan
Lake Sevan is the largest lake in Armenia and one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world. It is located at an altitude of 1,900 meters above sea level.
The journey from Yerevan to the lake takes only about one hour. Visitors can walk along the shore, climb up to the ancient Sevanavank Monastery, take a boat trip, and, of course, taste the famous Sevan trout, whitefish, or enjoy local beer with Sevan crayfish.
The water in Lake Sevan is fresh and quite cool, so the most comfortable time for swimming is usually July and August.
Noravank Monastery
Another location that should definitely be included in your itinerary is Noravank Monastery. Surrounded by dramatic red cliffs, this monastery can easily be considered one of the most beautiful places in Armenia.
The scenery here is so stunning that leaving feels almost impossible. However, the views are impressive not only from the monastery grounds — the road leading to Noravank itself is an unforgettable experience.
We recommend setting aside at least two hours for your visit so you can explore the monastery from different viewpoints, climbing the surrounding hills where some of the most spectacular panoramas open up.
If you are lucky, you may also spot bezoar goats, which have also chosen these magnificent cliffs as their home.
Geghama Mountains and mountain Azhdahak
The Geghama Mountains are one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in Armenia. These mountains are of volcanic origin. The highest peak of the range is Mount Azhdahak, reaching an altitude of 3,597 meters.
A small lake is located inside the crater of the volcano. Hiking through the Geghama Mountains is considered one of the most beautiful trekking routes in Armenia.
If you enjoy camping and mountain adventures, you should definitely include this route in your Armenian travel plans. Another popular option is a one-day ascent of Mount Azhdahak. In this case, we drive by off-road vehicles to the foot of the mountain and then climb one of Armenia’s most beautiful volcanoes.
On the way back, you can also see ancient petroglyphs. The hiking season in the Geghama Mountains usually begins in mid-July and lasts until the end of September.
Mount Aragats
Mount Aragats is the highest mountain in Armenia. Its elevation reaches 4,090 meters. Aragats has four peaks, with a volcanic crater located between them.
The most comfortable period for climbing Mount Aragats is from mid-June until October. On a clear day, the summit offers breathtaking views of Mount Ararat, Lake Sevan, and the Geghama Mountains.
The slopes of Aragats are also home to Amberd Fortress, as well as the famous Byurakan Observatory.
Dilijan National Park
Dilijan National Park is located in the Tavush Province, very close to the town of Dilijan, as its name suggests. It is one of the most forested and greenest corners of Armenia.
Therefore, if you enjoy walking through forests, Dilijan is definitely a place you should visit.
The territory of the park contains two major monastery complexes — Haghartsin and Goshavank — as well as two smaller churches, Matosavank and Jukhtak.
One of the most popular hiking routes is the trail from Lake Parz to Lake Gosh and Goshavank Monastery.

Gyumri — The Most Authentic City in Armenia
The city of Gyumri is perhaps the most colorful and authentic city in Armenia, successfully preserving the atmosphere of the previous century.
You should definitely visit Gyumri to walk through its old streets, which miraculously survived and were later restored after the devastating earthquake of 1988.
The city also offers many small but fascinating museums, a beautiful fortress, and, of course, the incredible sense of humor of its local residents.
Gyumri is the hometown of the famous Armenian and Soviet actor Frunzik Mkrtchyan.
The city will also appeal to lovers of gastronomic tourism. The most famous local dish is kyalla — a traditional dish made from a calf’s head prepared according to a special recipe.

Smbataberd Fortress
Smbataberd Fortress is located in the Vayots Dzor region, near the village of Yeghegis.
It is one of the oldest and largest fortresses in the Vayots Dzor and Syunik regions. The fortress offers magnificent views of the surrounding mountains.

For this reason, Meghri is considered the warmest town in Armenia.
Meghri is located on the border with Iran, and the Araks River flows along the border — another important symbol of Armenia.

Mount Dimats
Mount Dimats is located in Tavush Province, near the town of Dilijan.

Trchkan Waterfall
One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Armenia, v is located on the Chichkhan River, on the border between Lori and Shirak provinces, between the cities of Vanadzor and Gyumri.
The waterfall is approximately 23 meters high.

Mount Ukhtasar
Mount Ukhtasar is located in Syunik Province, near the city of Sisian. Its elevation is approximately 3,300 meters.

Armenian specialists still debate the origin of the mountain’s name. Some believe that “Ukhtasar” means “Pilgrim’s Mountain,” because numerous ancient petroglyphs — rock carvings left by prehistoric humans — are found on its slopes.
Others claim that the name translates as “Camel Mountain” because the shape of the mountain resembles a camel’s hump.
Gegharot Waterfall
Gegharot Waterfall is located at an altitude of more than 3,000 meters on the slopes of Mount Aragats.
You can reach the waterfall by off-road vehicle as part of a jeep tour to Gegharot Waterfall, or by joining a hiking route during the period from June to October.
In winter, the waterfall freezes, and the slopes of Aragats become much more challenging for climbing or off-road trips.
Lake Kaputan
Lake Kaputan, also known as Lake Gogi, is located in the mountains of the Zangezur Range at an altitude of approximately 3,200 meters above sea level.
The lake is one of the deepest in Armenia, with a maximum depth of 22 meters.
Not far from Lake Kaputan lies another beautiful mountain lake — Lake Tsakkari.
It is also located at an altitude of slightly over 3,200 meters in the Zangezur Mountains.
Lichk Waterfalls
Another natural treasure of Syunik Province is the Lichk Waterfalls — or, more precisely, a cascade of waterfalls located near the village of Lichk, close to the town of Meghri.
The waterfalls are situated on the Zvaraget River, which originates high in the mountains of the Meghri Range and flows down through a picturesque gorge.
The crystal-clear water forms small natural pools where visitors can enjoy a refreshing swim during hot summer days.
Khosrov Forest State Reserve
The Khosrov Forest State Reserve was named after King Khosrov III, who established it in the 4th century as a royal hunting ground.
At that time, the reserve stretched from the Temple of Garni to the city of Dvin, the ancient capital of Armenia.
Since 1958, Khosrov Forest has been officially protected as a nature reserve.
The reserve covers an area of more than 23,000 hectares. Two major left-bank tributaries of the Araks River — the Azat and Vedi rivers — flow through its territory.
The reserve also contains numerous mineral springs and four waterfalls, the most famous of which are Astghik and Vahagn waterfalls.
The area is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including around 50 species of mammals and nearly 200 species of birds, reptiles, and other animals.
Among the animals you may encounter here are brown bears, foxes, wild boars, bezoar goats, lynx, hares, and wolves. The Caucasian leopard has also recently returned to the reserve.
