Hike to Smbataberd Fortress

Description

Smbataberd is one of Armenia’s most impressive medieval fortresses and a perfect destination for a one-day hike. It stands high above the gorges of Vayots Dzor, surrounded by mountains and alpine meadows, with panoramic views across the surrounding ranges.

Our hike to Smbataberd Fortress begins in the historic village of Yeghegis. From here, a scenic mountain trail leads up to the fortress, which protected the roads and settlements of this region for centuries. Smbataberd is surrounded on three sides by the deep gorges of the Yeghegis and Artabuyn rivers, while its walls offer views towards the mountains of Vayots Dzor and the Teksar Range.

After a rest at the fortress, the hike continues to the Tsaghats Kar Monastery, located in the mountains not far from Smbataberd. In one day, the route combines a beautiful mountain hike with two historic sites.

The trail is particularly beautiful in late spring and early summer, when the valleys are covered in fresh greenery and wildflowers while snow may still remain on the surrounding peaks.
