Description

Three days in the far south of Armenia is a journey through Vayots Dzor and Syunik to Meghri and the Araks River valley. Along the way, the landscapes gradually change from the Ararat Valley, the dramatic cliffs and vineyards of Areni to deep gorges, high mountains and the almost subtropical scenery of Armenia’s southernmost region.

On the journey south, the route includes Noravank, a winery in Areni, and Tatev Monastery, reached by the famous Wings of Tatev cable car above the Vorotan Gorge. The first and second nights are spent in Kapan, a mountain city located at the foot of Mount Khustup.

The following day continues farther south to Meghri, close to the Armenian-Iranian border and the Araks River. On the return journey, the program explores the surroundings of Kapan with Vahanavank Monastery and Baghaberd Fortress, followed by a stop at Shaki Waterfall.

The 3-Day Meghri Tour is designed for travelers looking beyond Armenia’s classic routes — from the wineries of Vayots Dzor and Tatev to mountainous Kapan and the far south of the country.

Program

Day 1: Noravank – Tatev – Kapan

Morning departure from Yerevan towards Vayots Dzor.
Visit to Noravank Monastery, surrounded by the red cliffs.
Continue to Areni, one of Armenia’s best-known winemaking regions.
Visit to a local winery for a winery tour, wine tasting and lunch, depending on the selected rate.
Continue south towards Syunik and the Wings of Tatev cable car, crossing the spectacular Vorotan Gorge.
Visit to Tatev Monastery, one of the most important medieval monastic complexes in southern Armenia.
Continue to Kapan, surrounded by the mountains of Syunik at the foot of Mount Khustup.
Hotel accommodation.
Overnight in Kapan.

Day 2: Kapan – Meghri – Kapan

Breakfast at the hotel.
Departure south towards Meghri, Armenia’s southernmost city, surrounded by mountains near the Araks River and the border with Iran.
Walk through Meghri and explore the landscapes of Armenia’s far south.
Continue towards the Araks River and the Armenian-Iranian border area.
Lunch, depending on the selected rate.
Return to Kapan.
Overnight in Kapan.

Day 3: Kapan – Vahanavank – Baghaberd – Yerevan

Breakfast at the hotel.
Short tour of Kapan, with views of Mount Khustup, the mountain that dominates the landscape around the city.
Visit to Vahanavank Monastery, located in the mountains near Kapan.
Continue to the ruins of Baghaberd Fortress, one of the historic fortifications of Syunik.
Lunch, depending on the selected rate.
Departure towards Yerevan.
Stop at Shaki Waterfall on the way.
Return to Yerevan in the evening.
