Description

Mount Khustup is one of the most recognizable mountains in southern Armenia and a true symbol of Syunik. Its rocky summit rises 3,206 meters above sea level over Kapan, while the road towards the mountain passes through some of the region’s most impressive landscapes.

Our three-day Jeep Tour to Mount Khustup is much more than a journey to a single mountain. Traveling through Vayots Dzor and Syunik, we visit Noravank and Tatev, explore Kapan and head high onto the slopes of Khustup by 4×4 vehicle.

The main adventure comes on the second day. Following mountain roads and off-road tracks, we drive as high as possible towards the summit of Mount Khustup, before continuing on foot. A final hike leads towards the summit, with panoramic views across the mountains of Syunik.

On the return journey, we continue exploring southern Armenia with visits to Vahanavank Monastery and the ancient Baghaberd Fortress, followed by a stop at Shaki Waterfall on the way back to Yerevan.

The Jeep Tour to Mount Khustup is a great choice for travelers who want to discover Syunik beyond the standard sightseeing routes — combining real mountain off-roading, panoramic landscapes and the opportunity to reach one of southern Armenia’s best-known summits.

Program

Day 1: Yerevan – Noravank – Tatev – Kapan

  • Morning departure from Yerevan by 4×4 vehicle towards southern Armenia.
  • Drive through Vayots Dzor with a visit to Noravank Monastery, surrounded by the red cliffs of the Amaghu Gorge.
  • Continue towards Syunik and visit Tatev Monastery.
  • Continue through the mountains of southern Armenia towards Kapan.
  • Arrival and overnight in Kapan.

Day 2: Kapan – Khustup – Kapan

  • After breakfast, departure from Kapan by 4×4 towards Mount Khustup.
  • Continue along mountain roads and off-road tracks, climbing as high as possible on the slopes of Khustup.
  • From the highest accessible point, continue on foot towards the summit of Mount Khustup (3,206 m).
  • Time at the summit to enjoy panoramic views across the mountains of Syunik.
  • Descent to the 4×4 vehicles and return to Kapan.
  • Overnight in Kapan.

Day 3: Kapan – Vahanavank – Baghaberd – Yerevan

  • After breakfast, departure from Kapan.
  • Visit Vahanavank Monastery, located in the mountains near Kapan.
  • Continue to the ruins of Baghaberd Fortress, one of the historic fortresses of Syunik.
  • Drive north with a stop at Shaki Waterfall.
  • Continue to Yerevan.
  • Arrival in Yerevan in the evening.

The tour can be arranged in two ways:
– with a 4×4 vehicle for the entire 3-day journey,
– or with a 4×4 vehicle only for the Mount Khustup route on Day 2.


Unlike our trekking tour to Mount Khustup, this itinerary uses 4×4 vehicles to reach as high as road conditions allow, significantly reducing the hiking distance to the summit.
