Saghmosavank – Amberd Tour

Description

This route takes us from the deep Kasagh Gorge to the high-altitude landscapes of Mount Aragats, the highest mountain in modern-day Armenia. In a single day, the journey combines ancient monasteries, a medieval fortress and the changing landscapes of the Aragatsotn region.

The tour begins at Saghmosavank and Hovhannavank, both dramatically located on the edge of the Kasagh Gorge. After a stop at the Armenian Alphabet Monument, the road climbs the slopes of Mount Aragats towards the medieval Amberd Fortress. From there, the journey continues even higher to Lake Kari, a small mountain lake located at around 3,200 meters above sea level.

After the mountain part of the journey, lunch can be enjoyed at a local restaurant, or the tour can continue to one of the wineries of Aragatsotn for lunch, a winery visit and a tasting of Armenian wines.

The Saghmosavank – Amberd Tour is an excellent choice for combining Armenian history, the mountains of Aragats, beautiful landscapes and the winemaking traditions of the region in a single day.

During winter, Amberd Fortress and Lake Kari are inaccessible. The tour operates with a shortened itinerary.

Program

Saghmosavank –  Amberd – Mount Aragats

  • Morning departure from Yerevan towards the Aragatsotn region.
  • Visit to Saghmosavank Monastery, located on the edge of the impressive Kasagh Gorge.
  • Stop at the Armenian Alphabet Monument.
  • Continue up the slopes of Mount Aragats to the medieval Amberd Fortress, located at an altitude of around 2,300 meters.
  • Drive higher into the mountains to Lake Kari, located at approximately 3,200 meters above sea level.
  • Depending on the selected rate, lunch at a local restaurant or continue to one of the wineries of Aragatsotn for lunch, a winery tour and wine tasting.
  • Return to Yerevan.
