Hiking Yeranos - Smbataberd

Description

Two days, two completely different mountain landscapes of Armenia. The first day brings the almost Martian slopes of Mount Yeranos and panoramic views of Azat Gorge, while the second leads into the mountains of Vayots Dzor to the ancient Smbataberd Fortress and Tsaghats Kar Monastery.

The journey begins with an ascent of Mount Yeranos (1,824 m). Dry rocky slopes and unusual landforms make this route completely different from the green mountains of northern Armenia. From the summit, there are impressive views of Azat Gorge and Azat Reservoir, while on a clear day Mount Ararat and Mount Aragats can also be seen. After the hike, transfer to the historic village of Yeghegis for an overnight stay.

The following day, a mountain trail leads to Smbataberd Fortress, standing high above the gorges of Vayots Dzor. After a rest at the fortress, the hike continues towards Tsaghats Kar Monastery, surrounded by beautiful mountain landscapes.

The Yeranos – Smbataberd hiking tour is a great choice for travelers who want to spend two active days in the mountains while combining hiking with Armenian history. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for these longer hiking routes.

Recommended season: May–June and September–November.

Program

Day 1: Yerevan — Mount Yeranos — Yeghegis

  • Morning departure from Yerevan towards the starting point of the Mount Yeranos hiking route.
  • Beginning of the approximately 20 km hike through the dry, rocky landscapes of the area.
  • Ascent to Mount Yeranos (1,824 m), with panoramic views of Azat Gorge and Azat Reservoir. On a clear day, Mount Ararat and Mount Aragats can also be seen on the horizon.
  • Picnic lunch during the hike.
  • Continue the route towards Azat Reservoir, where the hiking part of the day ends.
  • Transfer to the village of Yeghegis in Vayots Dzor.
  • Overnight in Yeghegis.

Day 2:  Smbataberd Fortress — Yerevan

  • After breakfast, beginning of the hike from Yeghegis towards Smbataberd Fortress.
  • Ascent along a mountain trail to Smbataberd, with views across the surrounding gorges and mountains of Vayots Dzor.
  • Time to explore the fortress and rest.
  • Continue hiking towards Tsaghats Kar Monastery, located in the mountains near Smbataberd.
  • Lunch in the mountains.
  • Completion of the hiking route and return by vehicle to Yerevan.
