Description
Winter gives Armenia a completely different character. Snow-covered mountains surround Yerevan, Tsaghkadzor turns into the country’s main ski resort, and Lake Sevan, Dilijan and the ancient monasteries look especially atmospheric against the winter landscape.
This five-day journey combines Armenia’s classic highlights with the pleasures of travelling in winter. Explore Yerevan, Garni and Geghard, spend time in snowy Tsaghkadzor, see Lake Sevan and Dilijan, and travel south to Khor Virap and Noravank, where Mount Ararat and the red cliffs of Vayots Dzor create some of the most memorable scenery of the trip.
The route also introduces Armenia through its flavors and traditions — local wine in Areni, Armenian cuisine, freshly baked lavash and Armenian brandy. The final day is dedicated to Echmiadzin and Zvartnots, completing the journey with some of the country’s most important historical and spiritual landmarks.
A warm introduction to Armenia in the coldest season — with snow, mountains, history, wine and plenty of Armenian hospitality along the way.
Program
Day 1: Yerevan
- Arrival at Zvartnots International Airport.
- Meeting at the airport and transfer to the hotel in Yerevan.
- Check-in and time to rest.
- In the afternoon, guided sightseeing tour of Yerevan, with a walk through the city center and an introduction to the history, architecture and atmosphere of the Armenian capital.
- In the evening, welcome dinner with Armenian cuisine.
- Overnight in Yerevan.
Day 2: Garni – Geghard – Yerevan
- After breakfast, departure from Yerevan to Garni Temple, Armenia’s best-preserved monument from the pre-Christian period.
- Continue into the Azat River Gorge to visit the Symphony of Stones, an impressive natural formation of basalt columns.
- The journey continues with a traditional lavash-making demonstration, with a chance to see how Armenia’s famous flatbread is baked in a tonir.
- After lunch, visit Geghard Monastery, a medieval monastic complex surrounded by mountain cliffs, with part of its churches and chambers carved directly into the rock.
- On the way back to Yerevan, stop at Azat Reservoir for views of the surrounding winter landscape.
- Return to Yerevan.
- An optional visit to the Ararat Brandy Factory, including a guided tour and tasting, can be arranged in the afternoon.
- Overnight in Yerevan.
Day 3: Tsaghkadzor – Sevan – Dilijan – Haghartsin
- After breakfast, departure for Tsaghkadzor, Armenia’s best-known mountain and ski resort.
- Visit Kecharis Monastery, followed by free time in the resort. Depending on weather and snow conditions, there is an opportunity to take the cable car or spend some time skiing or snowboarding.
- Continue to Dilijan, surrounded by the forested mountains of Dilijan National Park.
- After lunch and a walk through the historic part of Dilijan, continue through the winter forest to Haghartsin Monastery, beautifully set among the wooded mountains.
- On the return journey to Yerevan, stop at Lake Sevan and visit Sevanavank Monastery, located on a peninsula overlooking the lake.
- Return to Yerevan in the evening.
- Overnight in Yerevan.
Day 4: Khor Virap – Noravank – Areni
- After breakfast, departure from Yerevan towards Khor Virap Monastery, one of Armenia’s most important pilgrimage sites. The monastery is closely associated with Gregory the Illuminator and the adoption of Christianity in Armenia. On a clear winter day, the view of snow-covered Mount Ararat from Khor Virap can be particularly impressive.
- Continue through Vayots Dzor to Noravank Monastery, surrounded by towering red cliffs that create a striking contrast with the winter landscape.
- Visit Areni-1 Cave, an important archaeological site where evidence of some of the world’s earliest known winemaking was discovered.
- The day continues with a visit to a local winery for wine tasting and lunch, depending on the selected rate.
- Return to Yerevan in the evening.
- Overnight in Yerevan.
Day 5: Echmiadzin – Zvartnots
- After breakfast, departure for Echmiadzin, the spiritual center of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
- Visit Etchmiadzin Cathedral, as well as the ancient churches of Saint Hripsime and Saint Gayane.
- Continue to Zvartnots, where the impressive ruins of the 7th-century cathedral stand against the backdrop of the Ararat Valley.
- Transfer to Zvartnots International Airport for departure.
