Description
Hiking tour through Geghama mountains is one of the most interesting and beautiful routes in Armenia. You will be isolated from the civilization and spend 3 days in mountains, lakes. You will feel the harmony with nature where there are only shepherds with their herds.
Geghama Mountains have volcanic origin. We will hike up to the highest peak of the ridge , volcano Azhdahak. It has 3597 m height. In the crater of the volcano there is a lake, which is fed by melt water. We will stay near the lake Akna for the night.
Climbing season: June – September
Program
Day 1: Sevaberd – Lake Akna
We will start our tour from the village Sevaberd and continue to walk around 10 km till the lake Akna. The lake is situated 3032 m above sea level in the Geghama highland which is 6 km far from the mount Azhdahak. We will break our campground. Tents and other heavy stuff will be brought by car.
Day 2: Climbing Azhdahak
After having breakfast we will walk 6 km from the lake Akna to the mount Azhdahak. Azhdahak is a extinct volcano. On the top of the mountain there is a crater lake. From the top of Azhdahak you will see a wonderful view of the mounts Ararat, Aragats, Lake Sevan as well as slopes of Geghama Mountains and the fields of Kotayk region. On the way we will see ancient petroglyphs left by ancient human.
Day 3: Vishapasar – Lake Vanki Litch – Garni
On the bank we will observe vishapakars (dragon stones). Vishapakars are sculptured figures of ancient mythical creatures. Initially they were gods or spirits of waters. They were placed near underground sources of water. After observing the Vishaps we will go down to the village Goght. We will return to Yerevan after having a stop at Garni.
