On September 21, 2026, Armenia celebrates one of its most important national holidays — Independence Day. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the historic referendum held in 1991, when the Armenian people voted to establish an independent state.
Today, the streets of Yerevan and other Armenian cities are filled with a festive atmosphere, music and the national colors. For Armenians, this day symbolizes freedom, unity and respect for their history, while for visitors, it offers a wonderful opportunity to discover the country’s rich culture and traditions.
On September 21, 1991, Armenia held a nationwide referendum in which an overwhelming majority of voters supported independence from the Soviet Union and the establishment of an independent state.
Since then, September 21 has been celebrated annually as the Independence Day of the Republic of Armenia.
Over the past 35 years, Armenia has come a long way while preserving its rich historical and cultural heritage. Ancient monasteries, centuries-old traditions, the Armenian language, national music and warm hospitality remain an integral part of modern Armenia.
Yerevan traditionally becomes the heart of the Independence Day celebrations. The capital welcomes the holiday with festive events, concerts and cultural programs.
A large-scale celebration is scheduled to take place in the city center, at Republic Square, featuring renowned Armenian performers, the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra and the National Academic Choir.
Visitors can enjoy musical performances and a historical and cultural presentation dedicated to Armenian history and national heritage.
The festive atmosphere extends far beyond the capital. Independence Day celebrations are also taking place in Gyumri, Ijevan, Kapan and other cities across Armenia.
The anniversary celebrations marking 35 years of independence began on September 17 in Ijevan. Festive concerts were subsequently held in Vanadzor, Kapan and Gyumri.
The celebrations will culminate in a grand concert at Republic Square in Yerevan on September 21. Approximately 250 artists are expected to participate, with the evening concluding with a festive show.
Traveling to Armenia during national holidays is a wonderful opportunity to experience the country from a different perspective. Armenian music fills the streets, cities are decorated with national flags, and locals and visitors come together to celebrate important moments in the nation’s history.
It is the perfect time to stroll through Yerevan in the evening, taste traditional Armenian cuisine, discover local customs and experience the country’s famous hospitality.
And if you would like to explore Armenia beyond the capital, venture into its beautiful countryside. Ancient monasteries, majestic mountains, picturesque gorges, wineries and charming mountain villages offer unforgettable experiences throughout the year.
