Secrets of Ancient Armenia: Remarkable Archaeological Discoveries Unearthed at Metsamor

Archaeologists have uncovered valuable artifacts from different historical periods at the Metsamor Historical and Archaeological Museum-Reserve in Armenia. The discoveries include gold jewelry, a bronze dagger, ancient pottery, and a coin dating back to the reign of Roman Emperor Augustus.

The findings were announced on October 27, 2026. These latest discoveries further highlight the historical significance of Metsamor, one of Armenia’s most important ancient settlements.

An Ancient Tomb Holding Secrets of the Past

During the excavations, archaeologists investigated an ancient burial chamber measuring approximately 6 × 4 meters, surrounded by a stone structure about 20 meters in diameter.

Inside, researchers discovered numerous artifacts dating to different historical periods, from the Late Bronze Age to antiquity.

Among the most remarkable finds were gold and bronze jewelry, a bronze dagger, fragments of an ancient belt, ceramic vessels, and a coin from the reign of Roman Emperor Augustus.

Of particular interest is the fact that, according to preliminary archaeological findings, the burial site was used repeatedly over many centuries.

These discoveries offer valuable insights into the burial traditions, everyday life, and cultural connections of the ancient inhabitants of the Armenian Highlands.

Metsamor — One of Armenia’s Most Important Ancient Archaeological Sites

Metsamor is located in Armenia’s Armavir Province, approximately 35 kilometers from Yerevan. It is one of the country’s most significant archaeological complexes, with a history stretching back several thousand years.

In ancient times, Metsamor was an important settlement known for its craftsmanship, particularly metalworking. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of ancient workshops, residential buildings, fortifications, and burial complexes.

Today, the Metsamor Historical and Archaeological Museum-Reserve preserves and displays artifacts discovered during decades of archaeological excavations.

Visitors can explore Armenia’s ancient history, discover archaeological remains, and learn how people lived in this region thousands of years ago.

New Discoveries Offer Another Reason to Explore Armenia’s History

Armenia continues to surprise archaeologists with fascinating new discoveries. Ancient settlements, fortresses, burial grounds, and temples reveal the country’s rich history and the diverse cultures that flourished here over thousands of years.

What makes these discoveries especially interesting is that many archaeological sites are located close to popular tourist routes, yet remain relatively unknown to international travelers.

Metsamor is one such destination. A visit offers a fascinating journey into Armenia’s distant past, long before the construction of the country’s famous medieval monasteries.

These latest archaeological discoveries are another reminder that Armenia is a true open-air museum, where history continues to reveal its secrets.
